How we get around, what we consume, how we live: our behaviour and our decisions have an impact on the world around us.
This booklet invites students at the University of Bern to consider what they need for a happy, good life. It follows a sufficiency approach, prioritising the wealth of time and space over the wealth of goods and money. Specific sections (travel, at home, eating & drinking, conscious consumption, culture and events) present facts, ideas and advice. Bern is home to a vast array of innovative stores, restaurants, organisations and associations that have chosen to promote a sustainable lifestyle. With their vouchers, the students can discover new stores and places and might even develop a liking for them. Self-experimenting stimulates creativity and invites you to try out something that may be unfamiliar, to develop new habits and to integrate them into your life.
The information in this book is not exhaustive. The advice we give should always be critically reflected upon by the readers in relation to their possibilities and needs. A consistently sustainable lifestyle is not easy to achieve at a societal level, but our own (consumer) behaviour can play a significant role.
The aim of this book is to accompany students in their everyday life in Bern, to give them food for thought, and to encourage them to think for themselves, to try out new things and to show by way of example that their lifestyle can improve their quality of life and that of the world around them.
